Guest Post: Makeup Mistakes You Didn't Know You Were Making

Thursday 3 September 2015

When a girl wants to look pretty, she puts on some makeup. True, makeup can cover all those tiny imperfections and boost our confidence. It is also true that overdoing it, or doing it the wrong way, can have quite the opposite effect. If you wish to avoid falling into this trap, read the following list of the common makeup mistakes and stop repeating them yourself.

1. Overlooking cleanliness
Wash your brushes and sponges regularly if you want them to last longer and so that bacteria wouldn’t grow on them. Makeup residue and oil from your skin that stay on the brushes can cause irritation, blemishes, even allergy. Not to mention acne and eczema. You don’t have to do it every day, but it is really important to make it a routine and do it at least once a week. Especially if you are sometimes sharing the brushes with friends. If you are using your bare hands to apply makeup, always wash those as well.

2. Overdoing makeup layers
Many women wrongly believe that powder foundation is their best friend who can make all imperfections disappear. So they go by “the more the merrier” motto, which often results in unnatural look. Unless you are covering up some really noticeable discoloration, there is no reason to apply foundation to your entire face. Try instead applying it to the T-zone only.

3. Not syncing your makeup with weather
Less is almost always more, but it is definitely so in the summer months. Hot and humid weather can make your makeup literally melt. Switch to lighter makeup, both in terms of colors and texture. Instead of foundation, use sunscreen or skin moisturizers. Consider using waterproof mascaras as they will not smear so easily. During the winter, however, wearing foundation is not such a bad idea as it creates a barrier and protects the skin from windburn.

4. Not removing makeup before sleep
Sleeping in your makeup is a bad habit and you know it. But do you know just how bad it is? While you sleep, your skin is regenerating itself. If you leave the makeup on before going to bed, it will not just cause breakout, it will also make you look older. So, before you go to sleep, make sure you wipe your face with a quality makeup removal tonic, like the ones you’ll find in Societe skincare products.

5. Applying makeup directly to skin
Just like using the wrong products, skipping to apply primer can be equally disastrous. First of all, a primer protects your skin from the makeup foundation. Secondly, primer serves to cover enlarged pores, “iron out” wrinkles, and even out your skin tone. Silicone-based primers will help you get flawless-looking skin in no time. Last but not least, primer is an imperative if you want your makeup to stay put.

6. Applying maquillage in inadequate lighting conditions

Makeup should never be done in the dark, nor under excessive lighting. The room should be well-lit so you could see the real effect, but also take into account the place where you will be wearing the makeup. Is it an office with natural lighting, or a bar with dim lights? Avoid applying makeup under neon lights, as you will see every little spot on your face that otherwise you would have never noticed. So you might easily overdo it, by trying to fix it.

There are many more mistakes you might be making unknowingly. Think what your beautifying habits are and could some of them be doing you more damage than good. Just remember, makeup should help you express your personality, not cover it up.

  1. Happy to say I manage to steer clear of these mistakes, though I have to admit sometimes washing my brushes is literally the last thing on my to do list...

  3. Useful post about makeup, It’s best to learn from other’s mistakes than to feel the urge to commit one by oneself & then think of learning. I think we’ve all made some of these mistakes to some degree or another. I'm glad that you have shared all these mistakes here.
